Brother Henry, a four-piece musical entourage from Nashville, Tennessee, carries a heavy torch: three brothers and a frere non de mere. The depth of a rare vocal gene pool is supported by cello, guitar, mandolin, and a crack Hofnerian rhythm section. All four members of the ensemble have toured and recorded with various well-known musicians, contributing to artists such as Ben Folds, Tim McGraw, Indigo Girls, Cowboy Junkies, Guster, Sixpence None the Richer, Steve Earle and REM. The Brothers released their first cd, Free Download , in 2004, following up their tour with a live album, "Live At The Basement,", recorded in Nashville. In 2005 they released Free Download with two tracks featuring guest keyboardist Chuck Leavell (Rolling Stones, Allman Brothers). Their third release, Love Survives, only expands their popularity and support in Nashville, Atlanta, Charlotte, Louisville, Winston Salem, Asheville... all over the Southeast.

On their self-released EP Buy MP3 Album , Sean Lee and The Masquerades provide added insurance that good, straightforward American songwriting won't die when Wilco retires. Hailing from Philadelphia, PA, Lee and his band jam through 17 minutes of alt-country and earthy pop-rock, with the verve of a group that knows what it's doing and will definitely know how to rock when the big show comes calling. From the get-go, Lee's talent as a songwriter and front man practically jumps out the speakers. At just 21 years of age, he ably upholds his half of comparisons to the likes of Elvis Costello and Tom Petty. His thoughtful yet refreshingly unforced lyricism is propelled by the bands, super-tight musicianship and Lee's earnest energy. Keeping in mind his age might bring one to a new level of appreciation for the Texas-two-step precision of How Do I Know or the gentle pacing and soulful restraint of the title track, The Apes Have Escaped .

After their 2005 self-titled debut, Asobi Seksu earned a lot of critical praise and a lot of My Bloody Valentine comparisons for its unabashedly shoegaze vision. Of Asobi Seksu's take on the genre, one music writer assessed, "'It's shoegaze.' But it's difficult to emphasize precisely how modern and revived this shoegaze is." In May of 2006, they released the follow-up, Citrus, showcasing, as CMJ noted, a tighter, more melody-driven "balance [of] turbulent shoegazer fuzz with sparkling pop confection," yielding a "more lush organic," and, I would add, more original result. Their latest recording Buy MP3 Album features 8 tracks from Citrus, 2 from their debut album, and one excellent cover.

Hybrid's lush, classical approach to house music has gained them a reputation as serious musicians in a genre with -- let's be honest -- a great number of amateurs. Trance and progressive house have all but faded to the sidelines of popular electronic music (especially in the United States), written off as dated or repetitive by many but the most devoted fans. Britain's nu-rave scene brought attention back to higher BPMs and '90s fashions, but the movement was doomed by irony almost before it began.

Chicago gets a lot of free press from Kanye West. So if national attention turns to Chi-town and catches wind (har har) of its still-thriving electro scene, all the better. Walter Meego met and formed at the U. of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1999, but have yet to put out a full album -- instead, the duo have concentrated on crafting and remixing their nearly perfect singles, fusing dance, pop, and electro.

Morris Mills has been playing in the Chicago music scene for a long time now, but is starting to gain national (and international) attention... and it is well deserved. His aptly named recent album, Buy MP3 Album is full of delicious songs that wake you up and make you yearn for someone to wrap your arms around. Especially notable are Hello , where Morris's falsetto soul style sends you into orbit and the title track Love & Coffee , which has a very Stevie Wonder feel to it. I am especially fond of the faster paced, high energy Steppin Out 2nite which is a bit of Lenny Kravitz meets modern electronica. Give him a listen and grab the album.
