In the Bed-Stuy section of Brooklyn, New York, known to be a proving ground where one of many musical talents is discovered, was born Jamel Richardson, a star waiting to shine. As early as three years old, Jamel discovered that he was blessed with the gift to play drums. Growing up in church, he was fortunate to be surrounded by many talented people, including his mother who was a choir director and father who was a drummer. In that nurturing environment, Jamel began to discover yet another gift where he was leading the children’s choir in song. It was at that time his pastor allowed him to express himself and develop his talent of singing every Sunday.
By early adolescence, hardship hit Jamel and his family. As in most single headed households, Jamel’s mother had to work two jobs taking time away from her children, including Jamel’s two younger sisters. For the most part, most bills were paid in addition to keeping decent clothes on their backs. But even so, Jamel felt the need to take matters into his own hands, by turning to the streets to create his own income. This was the route that Jamel felt would make things a little better for the family.
Being in the streets hustling everyday was the biggest hurt for Jamel, because he wanted nothing but the best for his family. He wanted to live like other normal families lived. So he decided to follow his dreams to be a great writer and musician. Realizing his natural ability to create, Jamel noticed the consistent melodies in his head that would repeat over and over each day. So in an attempt to write the melody he was feeling inside, he also discovered a new way of inner healing for himself.
During the phase of mid-adolescence, Jamel embarked on his interest in writing. Going through the many facets of disappointments, and let downs became very discouraging to Jamel. He got tired of people pushing him away and telling him that he wasn’t good enough. Jamel was ready to give up on the whole thing until "that day".
The day Jamel became reacquainted with an old time friend, Harold Fraser (Whitney Houston’s godson), who helped him to structure his songwriting. Being around a great musician like Harold, inspired Jamel to play the piano. It was at this time, the name JKeyz was officially established. Although JKeyz was never formally trained or taught, he posses the ability to play the piano by ear and observation. After years of honing and development, this new skill helped JKeyz to venture off into other fields and explore other opportunities. He became part of a production team called, “The Specialist,” where he co-produced songs for Pink, Young Americans, and Ray J, just to name a few.
As a seasoned producer and songwriter, JKeyz was still unsure of other undiscovered, hidden talents and abilities until he met one of the greatest ears in the industry, Shawn Thomas a.k.a. Exodus, who has taken JKeyz as an apprentice to further develop the unknown. Exodus always believed in JKeyz’s gift and inspired him to explore what real music is.
At this present moment, they’ve teamed up to create a unique heartfelt sound, which will add another color in the industry today. Working with recording engineer gurus like Tony Prendatt and Foster Bradley, helps JKeyz to create a new sound, a new level of music, called “ T.R.O.E. ”
It is now where JKeyz is ready to share his gifts, talents, and abilities through the art of music with the “ WORLD ” ……….
